Building Resilience and Empathy with Meditation (Michael Rector)

My motivation for doing this presentation is to share something that has helped me become a better, more empathetic teacher and at the same time is very interesting. The presentation is about  emotional regulation and meditation as a tool for developing control over ones emotions. I expect it to be of interest to people who

  • want to improve their emotional regulation
  • are interested in how the brain regulates emotion
  • are meditators and want to try a new kind of meditation
  • are interested in trying meditation for the first time
  • are interested in understanding what meditation is and how it works.

I will introduce a type of meditation called metta (loving kindness meditation). According to research by Richard Davidson and others, metta strengthens the left prefrontal cortex and its connections with the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens. This has the effect of improving ones ability to recover quickly from negative emotion and of increasing ones positive affect, motivation, and empathy.

In my talk I will talk about how metta works to reduce suffering from a Buddhist point of view, then I will guide participants in an experience of metta, and finally explain metta's effect on the brain and emotional regulation.

Very interesting!
Looking forward to this presentation, and I hope everyone will get something practical to take home from this, too!  cheers

Robert
