neuro-reasons behind addiction (and Robin Williams)

I was deeply saddened by the news of Robin Williams.
If you are an English teacher, you've probably seen Dead Poet's Society, and perhaps any number of his other movies.

Perhaps one way to celebrate his life is to continue to learn from what he has showed us -- the good and the bad. The net is flooded with articles about Robin. His addictions were no secret.  Why wasn't he able to kick his habit forever? Here is a scientific article that discusses how addiction happens in the brain, and more importantly, why our prefrontal cortex can't think its way out of addiction:
